Health is a Human Right

In 1978 the governments of the world came together and determined that “Health, which is a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being, is a fundamental human right, whose realization requires action by all governments.”

Health, they said, is in the same category as freedom and equality—fundamental rights of every human being in the world.

What’s more, governments have an obligation to create systems in which their citizens can reach a state of physical, mental, and social well-being.

Since then, people everywhere, from a rural clinic in Rwanda to the United States Congress, have struggled to fulfill that promise. Not every week is a victory. The question is: What will you do to ensure that health is a human right?

We all have a role to play. We must make the effort to understand the problems, think creatively about how to address them, be proximate to the people we’re trying to help, and use our skills and experience to be part of the solution.

This is the fight for health as a human right. This is the fight we are taking on with this film.
